 Pond Dipping

It was a very successful afternoon as we visited Two-Toed Pond today to try our hand at spotting and identifying pond insects!

The scenery was fabulous and, during the afternoon, we spotted a heron (with a huge wing span) and a muskrat as well!

Mme Gainor and Mme Glowacki came with us as we walked down the hill and over to the pond.  Once we were at the pond, each of our groups had the opportunity to visit three separate stations.

At one station  we were able to sit and use our senses to help us be aware of the nature around us.  We sketched each of our four senses in our visual journal.

The other two stations were at the water's edge, where we had the opportunity to take out the buckets and nets to pond dip.  We found pond skaters, boatmen, backswimmers, a minnow, a shrimp and a water beetle! We had a great time comparing our reference page of pond insects to the ones swimming in our bucket to see if we could make a match!

Our walk back up the hill and to school was a noisy one as we shared our discoveries with friends in other groups.  There were even a couple of us that started a "senses" game of what we could see, touch, hear and smell.

It was a fabulous afternoon!

Our Learning  Our plants are ready to come home!  We planted seeds exactly 13 days ago and we've been observing attentively ever since...
